Form 2553, S-corp election

Form 2553 routes to one of two IRS service centers based on your state of incorporation. Filing the wrong center delays processing.

Form 2553 has a 75-day filing deadline from the start of the tax year. Faxing provides instant proof of timely filing, verify with the IRS Form 2553 page.

Forms 2848 & 8821, Power of Attorney / Authorization

Forms 2848 (Power of Attorney) and 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) use the same fax routing, split between two CAF (Centralized Authorization File) units.

Western states (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, NM, OR, UT, WA, WY)855-214-7522Ogden CAF

Both forms are processed within 5-15 business days. Track CAF status by calling 1-800-829-1040.

Audit responses and CP2000

For audit responses (Letter 525, 566, 915, 3219, etc.) and CP2000 underreporter notices, the IRS does not publish a single fax number. Each letter contains the specific fax number for the IRS examiner or service center handling your case.

⚠️ Critical: Always use the fax number printed on your IRS letter. Sending an audit response to a generic IRS fax line will not reach the correct examiner and your timely-filing protection is lost. The letter date and fax number are on the upper-right or upper-left of page 1.

International filers

If you are filing from outside the United States and do not have a US legal residence:

  • Form SS-4 (EIN): 855-215-1627 (Philadelphia International)
  • Form 2848 / 8821: 855-214-7519 (Memphis, handles all international)
  • Form 2553 (S-corp): Use Ogden routing (855-214-7520) regardless of state of incorporation if filed from abroad

International callers can also dial the IRS at 267-941-1000 for clarification (this is not a toll-free number).

Numbers that changed recently

The IRS consolidated several fax numbers around 2020-2022. If you find an old number in a third-party guide, verify it against current IRS.gov instructions:

  • SS-4 Cincinnati: Old 859 area code numbers were retired. Use 855-641-6935.
  • 2553 Cincinnati: Replaced by Kansas City (855-887-7734) for eastern states.
  • CAF Memphis / Ogden: Numbers updated to 855-214-7519 / 855-214-7522.

How to verify the number for your form

Before sending any fax to the IRS, especially for time-sensitive filings:

  1. Go to IRS.gov/forms-pubs
  2. Search for your form (e.g., "Form 2553")
  3. Open the official instruction PDF (most current revision)
  4. Find the "Where to File" section, it lists fax numbers by state and filing type
  5. Cross-reference against the table above

If the IRS instruction page contradicts our table, trust the IRS page, fax numbers do change occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main IRS fax number?
There is no single "main" IRS fax number. Each form routes to a specific IRS service center. The most commonly used numbers are 855-641-6935 (Form SS-4 EIN, domestic), 855-887-7734 or 855-214-7520 (Form 2553 S-corp, varies by state), and 855-214-7522 (Forms 2848 and 8821 power of attorney/authorization).
How do I find the right IRS fax number for my form?
Go to IRS.gov, search for your form (e.g., "Form 2553 instructions"), and look for the "Where to File" section. The fax number depends on the form and often your state. We list all common numbers above, but always verify against IRS.gov instructions before filing.
Is the IRS fax number toll-free?
Most current IRS fax numbers begin with 855 (toll-free). Some legacy numbers begin with 859 (Cincinnati area, not toll-free). Faxend's online service handles long-distance routing transparently, you pay a flat $2.99 for up to 5 pages regardless of where the IRS service center is located.
Are IRS fax numbers different by state?
Yes for some forms. Form 2553 routes to one of two numbers based on your state of incorporation. Form 2848 and Form 8821 also have state-based routing. Form SS-4 has one domestic number for all 50 states and a separate number for international applicants. Always check the form's instruction page on IRS.gov.
Does the IRS still accept faxes?
Yes, the IRS continues to accept faxes for specific forms in 2026. Forms SS-4, 2553, 2848, 8821, audit responses, and CP2000 notice replies are all fax-eligible. Tax returns (1040, 1120, etc.) are not accepted by fax, those must be e-filed or mailed.
What if the IRS fax number changes?
The IRS has consolidated fax numbers in recent years (notably in 2021 when they retired the Cincinnati 859 number for SS-4 in favor of 855-641-6935). We review and update this page annually, but always verify the number on IRS.gov for the form you are sending, especially for time-sensitive filings.
Can I use any of these numbers to fax my tax return?
No. The IRS does not accept tax returns (Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1120, 1065, 941, 944) by fax. These must be filed electronically or mailed. The fax numbers above are only for non-return forms and IRS correspondence responses.
What is the IRS Cincinnati fax number?
The IRS Cincinnati EIN Operation fax number is 855-641-6935 for domestic Form SS-4 applications. The legacy 859 area code Cincinnati fax was retired and replaced with this 855 toll-free number around 2021.
Is there an IRS fax number for refund inquiries?
Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) is generally accepted by mail, not fax. If the IRS requested you fax Form 3911 in response to a specific letter, the fax number will be on that letter. Otherwise, mail Form 3911 to the address on the form's instructions.
What is the IRS audit response fax number?
There is no universal audit response fax number. The fax number for your audit response is printed on the IRS examination letter (Letter 525, 566, or 915). Use the number on your specific letter, it routes to the examiner assigned to your case.
